Introduction to Joints Flashcards
What is a joint?
Articulation is an anatomical name given to a point of contact - between two bones
What are the classifications of a joint?
Structure class, type, mobility, axis of rotation
What is the purpose of joint mobility?
To identify how much a joint can move
Synarthrotic
No movement
Amphiarthrotic
Slightly moveable
Diathrotic
Freely moveable
What is the purpose of joint structure class?
To identify what material connects the bone
Fibrous joint
Connected by fibres and the length determines the amount of movement
Cartilaginous joint
Connected by cartilage and the cartilage type determines amount of movement
What are the types of fibrous joints?
Suture, syndesmosis, gomphosis
Suture
Short fibres, ‘seams’ and is located between the bones of the skull
Syndesomose
Long fibres, located at distal tibiofibular joint
Gomphosis
Peg-in-socket, located at tooth in gun
What are the types of cartilaginous joint?
Synchondroses, symphysis
Synchondroses
Connected by hyaline cartilage
