Bone Formation Flashcards
What is ossification?
The process of bone formation
What are the steps of ossification?
- Begins as an embryo
- First 8 weeks: fibrous membranes and hyaline cartilage forms
- Bones grow until early adulthood (~25 years)
- Bones remodel during adulthood
Mesenchymal cell
Origin cell
Osteoblast
Immature bone cell
Osteocyte
Mature bone cell
Compact bone
Bone is dense and hard
Spongy bone
Bone is porous with trabeculae
Trabeculae
Bone has random spurts within spongy bone
Osteoid
building material (bone making)
Red marrow
material (bone making)
What are the types of ossification?
- Intramembranous ossification
2. Endochondral ossification
Where does intramembranous ossification occur and what does it create?
Occurs in a fibrous membrane and creates all flat bones
Where does endochondral ossification occur and what does it create?
Occurs in hyaline cartilage model and creates all bones, excluding flat bones
