Connective Tissue Flashcards
What is Connective Tissue?
An important and abundant substance found within the body, especially in the skeletal and muscular system
Where is Connective Tissue found?
Ligaments, muscles, bones, tendons, fat tissue
What is the role of Connective Tissue?
Binding and support, protection, insulation, transport
What are the elements of Connective Tissue?
Ground substance, fibres, cells
Ground Substance
It fills the space between connective tissue cells and contains fibres
What are the three types of fibres? Provide an example for each
- Collagen: high tensile strength e.g. tendons and ligaments
- Elastric: strength and recoil e.g. blood vessels
- Reticular: thin, delicate networks e.g. soft tissue
What are the two types of cells?
- Immature: -blast
2. Mature: -cytle
What is dense connective tissue? Provide an example
Flexible structure with great resistance to tension e.g. tendons and ligaments
What is loose connective tissue? Provide an example
Framework for storage, immunity and binding e.g. tendons and ligaments
Cartilage
Tissue that is avascular
What is avascular?
Having few or no blood vessels
What is the job of hyaline cartilage and identify where one is located?
Reduces friction and is located at the end of long bones, nose, costal ribs and growth plates
What is the job of fibrocartilage and identify where one is located?
Absorbs shock and is located at the intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis, knee
What is the job of elastic cartilage and identify where one is located?
Springs back to shape and is located at the ear
What is a bone?
A tissue that is strong and forms a bony component of the skeleton
