Introduction to Health & Disease in Individual Populations (1) Flashcards
What is the epidemiologic triad?
agent
host
environment
What is amplification?
when infectious agents multiply rapidly to high levels
as animal diseases wax and wane with time, conditions such as close proximity with humans there is a chance for spillover. Following spillover, it sometimes leads to amplification in another species, animal or humans. When spillover occurs, it can result in rapid increase of disease in another species, this is known as amplification.
Why are we seeing emerging disease?
environmental temperatures
human industrial capability
human encroachment
Kuru disease in Papua New Guinea due to cannabilism —> leads to progressive dementia that’s infectious
less space between us and animals - urbanization
global travel
antimicrobial resistance
live animal (bird) market
immunocompromised people
What are the 2 most important reasons for seeing emerging diseases?
land use and ecosystem changes
climate and weather
