Introduction to Canada 1837-1840: Flashcards
What treaty meant the British got all of the new France colonies?
1763 Peace of Paris.
What Act created the government system of Upper and Lower Canada?
1791 Constitution Act.
Briefly describe the differences between lower and upper Canada:
Upper Canada had a largely British population whereas Lower Canada was mostly French settlers. They had different languages and social systems.
How did Upper Canada change throughout the 1820s?
Immigration through loyalists from USA and in 1825 the Canada Company was created to help develop the province.
Describe political situation of Upper Canada:
Lieutenant Governor who was reliant on legislative assembly and a council who had executive power alongside the Governor.
Could the executive council members be removed by the lieutenant governor?
Yes - but some could stay on for life which created the Family Compact.
What representation was there in the LA?
They mostly represented the interests of middle class landowners.
What powers did legislative council have?
They could block some laws passed by the LA.
Name the 3 characteristics of the Family Compact:
Very loyal to Britain, very Anglican and their reluctance to change anything about the constitution which would weaken their grip on power.
Describe land ownership in UC:
1/7 of all land was for Clergy reserves with profits going to Anglican Church. Most land was held by the crown and judged to be lent to settlers.
What was the main religion in UC?
Baptist and Methodist.
What was the significance of the Clergy Reserves?
This was contentious amongst non-Anglicans as it adhered only to Anglicans. Reform was not possible as it was blocked by family compact.
Summarise the tensions in UC:
Mostly came from the Family Compact - very little population (350k) to raise revenue from as they lacked money from investment in canals and roads. Instead of working with the LA to handle this issue, they resolved to selling land to the Canada Company and this money was mostly used to pay salaries of the officials.
What were Reformers?
Member of the LA who wished for more economic and political control of the province rather than it being solely controlled by the Family Compact e.g. Robert Baldwin.
What did Reformers want by the term ‘Responsible Government’?
Initially it was for the removal of the Family Compact, but as things progressed they made more claims for constitutional change - responsible to voters in Canada rather than interests in London.
