Introduction to Blood Flashcards
What volume is blood?
5 litres
What is job of arteries?
Brings oxygenated blood from heart to organs and tissues
What is job of veins?
Brings deoxygenated blood from organs and tissues to heart, followed by the lungs for reoxygenation
What are the exceptions to arteries and veins?
Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood
Pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood
How much blood does heart pump per minute?
5 litres
Describe one cycle of circulatory system
- Deoxygenated blood from tissues and organs is collected via the vena cava into the right atrium
- Right ventricle then pumps blood through the pulmonary arteries to the lungs where reoxygenation happens
- Blood collected through pulmonary veins into left atrium
- Left ventricle pumps blood via aorta back to tissues and organs
What is job of valves?
Prevents back flow of blood
Why is left ventricle thickest of heart chambers?
Responsible for pumping oxygenated blood all over body
Why is left ventricle thickest of heart chambers?
Responsible for pumping oxygenated blood all over body
Where does the right ventricle pump blood?
Solely to the lungs for repxygenation
