Introduction to aromatic chemistry Flashcards
What are Arenes?
Arenes are aromatic hydrocarbons containing one or more benzene rings. A benzene molecule is a ring of six carbon atoms, each of which is bonded to one hydrogen atom.
Draw benzene and give its molecular formula.
Molecular formula : C6H6
Any compound with the benzene ring is classifiied as an aromatic compound.
Where do arenes occur?
Arenes occur naturally in materials such as crude oil and coal, and can be produced in refineries from crude oil.
Name the compound compound.
Nitrobenzene
Name the compound
Chlorobenzene
Name the compound
Ethylbenzene
Name the compound
2- bromomethylbenzene
Note: Carbon atoms in the benzene ring are numbered to give the smallest numbers.
Describe the properties and characteristics of benzene.
Benzene is a colourless liquid with a sweet odour. It is highly flammable and is formed in both natural processes and human activities.
Benzene is classified as a carcinogen - a chemical known or believed to cause cancer in humans.
Name some natural sources of benzene and human activies that produce benzene.
- Natural sources of benzene include volcanoes and forest fires.
- Benzene is a component of crude oil, petrol and cigarette smoke.
