Amines 36-37 Flashcards
What are amines?
Amines are all derivatives of ammonia.
Draw the general structure of primary, secondary and tertiary amines.
Give an example of three diffirent types of amine derivatives and their uses in medecine or body functions.
Amphetamine is an amine used to treat daytime drowsiness and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Phenylephrine is an amine commonly used as a decongestant. Phenylelphrine is found in many over-the-counter cold and flu preparations, commonly in combination with paracetamol.
Adrelanine is the ‘flight or fight; amine helping the body to deal with sudden stresses.
What sort of smell are amines known for?
fishy smell
Why are amines weak bases?
Amines have a nitrogen atom which has a lone pair of electrons that can be used to create a dative covalent bond with a hydrogen atom. Hence it can act as base because it can accpets protons.
Write out the reaction of methylamine as a base.
Write out the general reaction of amines with acids.
(like base + acid)
base + acid ⇒ salt
Write out the reaction of ethylamine with HCl.
Name the product also
CH3CH2NH2(aq) + HCl(aq) → CH3CH2NH3+Cl-(aq)
The product is called ethylammonium chloride.
