Acids and stuff Flashcards
What is a monobasic acid?
A monobasic acid is an acid that can release on proton per molecule.
What is a dibasic acid?
A dibasic acid is an acid that can release two protons per molecule.
H2SO4 is a dibasic acid because each molecule can release 2 protons. This is done in two stages.
H2SO4—> H+ + HSO4-
HSO4- H+ + SO4^2-
What is a tribasic acid?
An acid in which each molecule can release 3 protons.
Show the reaction between HCl and water in a simplified form and another form.
HCl(aq) —-> H+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
HCl(aq) + H2O(l) —–> H3O+(aq) + Cl-(aq)
What is an acid-base pair?
An acid-base pair is a set of two species that transform into each other by gain or loss of a proton.
Describe in the following:
HNO2(aq) + H2O(l) H3O+(aq) + NO2-(aq)
Which is the acid/conjugate acid and base/conjugate base
HNO2 is the acid and its conjugate base is NO2-
H2O is the base and its conjugate acid is H3O+
