Introduction and Quantitative research Flashcards
Definition of research
Scientific method of solving unsolved problems
Objective of research
- to obtain familiarity with a phenomenon or to gain new insights
- to examine a hypothesis of a causal relationship between variables
Research in Degree involves…
- Doing a primary research- to build upon what you have already found out about a subject
- Comparing the findings and drawing
How many steps are there in planning a research paper?
There’s 7 steps:
1. Defining the problem
2. Literature review
3. Choosing a suitable research design
4. Choosing a suitable sampling design
5. Gathering data
6. Processing and analysing data
7. Preparing for the report
How many types of researchers are there?
2 types of research and they are internal and external researchers.
Internal researchers- consulting own or research department within the organisation
External researcher- A researcher who is outside of the organisation
The advantages and disadvantages of Internal researcher
ADVANTAGES
1. they are aware of the organisation and its mission.
2. they usually cost lower than an external researcher
DISADVANTAGES
1. May be stereotype due long tenure in the organisation
2. biases
The advantages and disadvantages of external researcher
ADVANTAGES
1. Not biased
2. Able to consider various methods of research
DISADVANTAGES
1. the cost of hiring an external researcher can be costly
2. organisational members not cooperate with them
Quantitative research definition
objectives in its ways of using numerical data
How many data types/levels of measurement are there?
There are 4
1. Nominal- from a person ; can be name or gender
2. Ordinal- arranged in order; example, ranking size of clothes etc.
3. Interval- No true point of ZERO; example, temperature
4. Ratio- has a true point of zero; example, money or any numerical data
Concepts in quantitative research
Total of 6 and they are
1. Population- refers to the target group which is under investigation
2. Sample size- number of subjects included in a sample size
3. Sampling unit- the subjects selected for the purpose of sampling
4. Dependent and independent variables- IV (cause) DV (effect)
5. reliability- the consistency of the data
6. validity- attempting to measure accurately
Formulating research objectives
Problem definition => Research question—> Research objectives–> Research Hypotheses
Methods of data collection
- Observation
- Interview
- Questionnaire
- Database
