What did industrialisation do? When was it
Industrialisation of the 1890s brought huge demographic and social changes to Russia. It led to growth in opposition as the Tsarist regime had failed to concede to the political demands.
What was the biggest threat to the regime?
The biggest threat to the regime was war.
Russo- Japanese War and the First World War exposed fully the weaknesses of the regime.
Nicholas II’s accession to the throne
1894.
It was smooth with widespread celebrations.
At his official coronation 1,400 people were crushed to death but the celebrations continued.
What was already growing on his accession to the throne?
Opposition.
A strong Tsar was needed to hold this back.
However, Nicholas failed to face the real issues in Russia.
as Fifes noted in 1997, Russia was an “autocracy without an autocrat”
