When was the Russo-Japanese War?
1904-5
January 1904
Port Arthur was shelled by the Japanese (angry China had allowed Russia a 25 year lease on the port)
Plehve credited with encouraging the Tsar to respond with a “short, swift victorious war”
December 1904
Port Arthur surrendered to Japan.
February 1905
Battle of Mukden began, ending in March in defeat (90,000 Russian troops killed)
May 1905
The Russian Baltic fleet is sunk in the Tsushima Strait.
August 1905
Treaty of Portsmouth ends the war
Japan gained the southern half of the island Sakhalin
Once the war had ended what could the Tsar do?
Bring troops back t suppress uprisings at home
Economic impact of the war
Trade with the East along the Trans-Sibreian railway was disrupted by military priorities.
Shortages of raw materials, e.g. silk, cotton and chemicals affecting industries leading to factories closing. Especially in St Petersburg (resulted in loss of jobs)
Food prices were rising, unemployment was increasing and led to growing discontent in the winter of 1904-5.
