January 1905

A

Putilov Iron Workers’ strike-
Involed around 150,000 workers.

Many strikers belonged to father Gapon’s union.

A peaceful march took place to the Tsar’s Winter Palace in St Petersburg.

12,000 troops used to break up this demonstration= known as Bloody Sunday.

This sparked demonstrations throughout Russia.

February 1905

A

The Tsar’s uncle= assassinated. He was the Governor General of Moscow (Grand Duke Sergei.

Tsar now agreed to meet representatives of the workers, but he only made matters worse by saying the strikers should return to work.

He also appointed 2 hardliners

  • Bulygin (Minister of Internal Affairs)
  • Trepov (military governor of St Petersburg)

A

Railway workers went on strike. This sets off a general strike that receives some support from the middle classes.
