Psychology
The scientific study of people, the mind and behaviour
Checkland 1981- science is human activity characterised by:
Reductionism
Repeatability
Refutation
Induction
No such thing as an unbiased fact or a self-evident truth. All pacts are constructed and subject selection and censorship
Who came up with the hypo-deductive method?
Popper 1959
Hypo-deductive model
Theories lead to hypotheses which are tested against facts. When there’s s discrepancy between hypotheses and facts then a theory is reformulated
Hypo-deductive method
From theory we deduce hypotheses
Then empirically validate our hypotheses
Hypotheses that aren’t empirically supposed lead to reformulation or abandonment of theory
Should seek to refute rather than support our hypotheses
Operational definition
Explains a concept solely in terms of the operations used to produce and measure it
Operational definition difficulty
Often leads to questions being raised in respect of its validity
Limits of science
Theories have to be empirically testable
Science cannot explain everything
