introduction Flashcards
what are examples of progressive neurological disorders?
-MS
-Parkinson’s disease
-MND
-neuro-oncology
what are examples of peripheral nervous system diseases?
-peripheral nerve injuries
-polyneuropathies eg Guillain barrem CIDP
-facial palsy
-poliomyelitis
what is rehab?
a set of interventions designed to optimise functioning and reduce disability in individuals with health conditions, in interaction with their environment
-it aims to maximise a persons ability to live, work and learn
how can you use the ICF framework for neuro?
-condition: key pathology, course & prognosis
-impairments - strength, tone, ROM, co-ordination, sensation, cognition, gait, balance etc
-activity limitation - ADLS, mobility
-participation - major roles in life - family, occupation, interests and socialising
-personal factors: culture, support, motivation, partner
-environmental factors: home, work, society
how can you treat ROM, tone and muscle length?
-positioning
-splinting
-stretching
- antagonist activation and strengthening
how can we treat weakness in neurology?
-strengthening exercises
-NMES
- facilitation of movement (you help them do the movement through cues, physical support etc)
how can we treat activity limitations or poor functional skills?
-motor learning
-cognitive movement strategies
-aids
-education
-compensation (eg using stronger side of body for transfers, modifying environment etc)
how can we treat balance issues?
-balance re-education (exercises involving reaching/ moving out of BOS or using foam surface)
-motor learning
-strengthening
-vestibular rehab
how can we treat gait?
-walking aids
-visual and auditory cueing
-gait re-education
how can we treat poor posture?
-facilitation
-feedback
what are the core concepts of rehabilitation?
-assessment - looking at abilities, impairments, outcome measures etc
-interpretation - problem lists, goals, treatment plan
-treatment - restoration of movement and function, self management
-re-evaluation- outcome measures, progress towards goals
what is neuroplasticity?
-the ability of the nervous system to respond to intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli by reorganising its structure, function and connections
what is axonal collateral sprouting?
When healthy neurons grow new axonal branches to connect with neurons that have lost their original input due to damage.
what is habituation in neurology?
process by which the brain and nervous system reduce their response to a repeated, benign stimulus over time
