gait analysis in neurology part 2 Flashcards
before assessing gait, what things would you look at?
-observe the patient
-measure - tone, ROM, power
-feel
-neuro ax- proprioception, sensation+ co-ordination
-outcome measures
what are the 4 purposes of trunk lean as a compensation in gait?
-compensate for LL weakness
-decrease in joint + muscle pain
-compensate for contracture
-a motor for advancement where there is global weakness
what are the features o drop foot?
-lack of heel strike - foot makes a slapping noise when it hits the ground
- toes can drag on the floor when walking
what are some examples of causes of drop foot?
-stroke
-peripheral nerve damage
what clinical tests would verify drop foot?
strength test - DF and PF strength
-sensation testing
-compare muscle bulk on both legs - the foot with the drop could have less muscle
what is an example of a compensation might occur?
-circumduction
what are features of a stiff knee?
- lack of knee flexion
-very extended knee
what are the causes of stiff knee?
-spasticity
-stroke
-TBI
-MS
What clinical tests could we do if we see a stiff knee gait?
-ROM
-Tone
what is dystonia?
sustained or intermittent muscle contractions causing abnormal movement patterns or postures
what are examples of equipment for gait in neurology?
-mobility aids eg 4ww
-AFO
-dictus splint
-functional electrical stimulation
