Introduction Flashcards
Histology (microscopic anatomy/microanatomy
-branch of biology which studies the microscopic anatomy of biological tissues
-performed by examining thin slices of tissue under a microscope
Light microscope
shines light through the sample
-large areas (several cm^2)
-wide range of stains
-up to ~1000 X mag
Electron microscope
-uses a beam of accelerated electrons as a source of illumination
-small areas (<1mm^2)
-subcellular resolution
-up to ~ 100,000 X mag
H&E (Haemotoxylin and Eosin)
most commonly used staining system
-the nucleus and parts of cytoplasm that contain RNA stain as one color; the rest of the cytoplasm stain as a different color
Morphology
study of form and shape of structures
Morphometry
measurement of the shape of structures
Stereology
examination of 2D images to gain information about 3D structures
Cytology
the study of cellular structure and function
Sex cell/Gametes
cells that fuse during sexual reproduction
ie. sperm, oocytes
Somatic cells
-body cells; approx. 220 types in the human body
