What is the cranial cavity?
formed by cranial bones and contains the brain
What is the vertebral canal?
formed by vertebral column and contains spinal cord and the beginnings of spinal nerves
What cavities are within the thoracic cavity?
-pericardial cavity
-pleural cavity
-mediastinum
Where and what is a pleural cavity?
each surrounds a lung; the serous membrane of each pleural cavity is the pleura
Where and what is the pericardial cavity?
surrounds the heart; the serous membrane of the pericardial cavity is the pericardium
Where is the mediastinum?
central portion of the thoracic cavity between the lungs; extends from sternum to vertebral column and from first rib to diaphragm
What is contained within the mediastinum?
heart, thymus, esophagus, trachea, and several large blood vessels
How is the abdominopelvic subdivided?
abdominal and pelvic cavities
What makes up the abdominal cavity?
stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, small intestines, and most of the large intestine
What is the serous membrane of the abdominal cavity called?
peritoneum
What makes up the pelvic cavity?
contains urinary bladder, portions of the large intestine, and internal organs of reproduction
