What are the assumptions of the DSM-5 classification system?

A
  1. A mental disorder is defined as a clinically significant behavioral or psychological syndrome associated with present distress or disability or with increased risk of suffering pain, disability or important loss of freedom
  2. There is a distinction between neurosis and psychosis
    Psychosis: Loss of contact with reality
    Neurosis: Distressing symptoms that are distressing and enduring

What is diathesis-stress model?

A

Diathesis refers to a predisposition due to biological, social or family reasons. Stress refers to any additional factor that together with predisposition can lead to a disorder

Contributing risk factors for psychopathology

A

Low socioeconomic status, economic problems, prejudice and discrimination, maladaptive peer relationship, family structures, inadequate parenting, early deprivation or trauma, primary reaction tendencies and temperament, physical handicaps
