Introductary Terms Flashcards
What is the explanatory factor
The variable that is manipulated (indépendant variable)
what is outcome measure?
The variable that is observed (dependant variable)
What are secondary outcome measures?
Relates to secondary research question
Alternative explanatory factors
Other explanations for the change in the dependant variable
Reliability
Extent to which the test is a consistent measure
Inter rater reliability
Similar performance is achieved on the same test when administrated by different people
Test retest reliability
Similar performance is achieved on the same test for the individual on multiple occasions
Validity
The extent to which somthing measures what it set out to measure
Face validity
Test appears to measure what it claims to
Construct validity
Test measures the psychological ability/ behaviour it intended to
Internal validity
Extent to which the results of a study can be generalised across people places and times
Population
The large group of individuals form of interest to the researcher
Sample
The group of individuals from the population that will be tested
Probability sampling
Each individual in a population has a specified chance of selection
Simple random sampling
Every individual in a target population has an equal chance of being selected for this sample (fair and unbiased however no guarantee it will be representative)
