Q

Name four ways the human body dissipates heat?

A
  • Radiation - heat floors from hotter to cooler bodies. PPE, RPE and high ambient temperature prevents this flow
  • Vaporisation - blood is cooled in the lungs by air.
  • Convection - air flowing over the body to cool it. PPE and RPE prevent this.
  • Evaluation - sweat evaporating from the body. PPE and RPE makes this minimal

Q

What methods can be put in place to limit the effects off heat stress and dehydration?

A

Rotation of BA crews.
Using a holding/recovery area in the shade.
Ensure a supply of drinking water.
Reserve crews should be encouraged to relax dress.

Cool hands, wrists and arms in water (radial cooling).
Firefighters waiting to wear BA should avoid high levels of physical activity. The attendance of the LAS to oversee welfare of crews and BA teams.

A

Positive pressure, first breath activated.
Speech diaphragm.
Additional flow button.
Stable air supply with low breathing resistance.
The FPS 7000 is a dual-purpose facemask and can be converted to a respirator by removing the LDV and attaching a filter cartridge.

17
Q

GPS 7000 mask feature

A
  • Impact and scratch resistant polycarbonate visor
  • 5 strap adjustable harness
  • Neck strap
  • Inner mask to stop misting
  • Dual purpose face mask (DPFM) Can be converted into a Respirator mask by taking off the lung demand valve and relaxing with filter cartridge
18
Q

When can respirators NOT be used?

A

In oxygen deficient, or toxic atmospheres

19
Q

What is the function of the Lung Demand Valve (LDV)?

A

To supply air at a breathable pressure to meet the demands of the wearer.

20
Q

What kind of couplings are on the ‘Inline’ and ‘Second person connection’?

A

Quick release couplings (QRC)

21
Q

What is the function of the reducer?

A

To assist with the reduction of cylinder pressure to a breathable pressure.

22
Q

Describe the three non-kink rubber hoses that lead from the reducer?

A

High pressure to the electronic management unit. Medium pressure to the LDV.
Medium pressure to the second person connection.

23
Q

Hose pressure

A

High pressure hose 300bar Medium pressure hose 6-9 bar Second person connection 6-9 bar

24
Q

Name some features of the bodyguard 7000?

A

Monitors available air pressure of cylinder.
Time to Warning (TTW) – numeric display.
Time of Warning (TOW) – flashing LEDs and audible. Visual LED indicators: Green – operational mode / key removed. Red / Blue – warning mode. Blue – telemetry signal.
Motion sensor and auto distress signal unit (ADSU).
Button activated Manual distress signal unit (DSU).
Backlight.

25
Q

The low battery warning signal operates when the battery drops below 5.5 volts. How long is it acceptable to use the set for after this?

A

2 hours

26
Q

At what pressure will the electronic and the pneumatic low-pressure warnings operate?

A

84 and 74 bar (+/- 5bar) respectively.

27
Q

The pneumatic warning is provided as a safety margin for BA wearers. How long is this period

A

10 mins at 50 litres per minute.

28
Q

A BA tally is used for safety control procedures to record the details of each wearer. What colour are they?

A

Yellow for SDBA.

Red for EDBA.

29
Q

What information should be added to the tally using a chinagraph pencil?

A

The role and name of wearer.
The cylinder pressure.
The entry time into the risk area (using ECB clock).
