What emergency procedures are available to BA teams committed to an incident?
To sound DSU.
Go into entrapped procedure.
Manually exchange air with another BA wearer. Call for assistance by radio.
When must a BA wearer operate the DSU?
Lost or confused.
Injured and in difficulty.
Have problems with BA set. Become distressed or disorientated.
When going into entrapped procedure, what actions should take place?
Inform the ECO / comms op.
Operate one DSU.
Relax.
Maintain physical contact with other team members. Keep speech and movement to a minimum.
Do not use additional flow button. Do not adjust the cylinder valve Keep personal lamps switched on.
On being informed of a BA team becoming entangled in cables, an ECO must?
Commit an emergency team and Inform IC
Aiding a BA wearer in distress takes precedence over the work in hand, but other factors should be considered :
- Having sufficient air to enable effective assistance to be given
- Maintain safe egress
- Whether a BA team is already committed to the rescue
- BA team hearing a DSU or ADSU should advice ECO/comms-op and should keep them
informed of their actions
When BA team leader is making decisions to withdraw after DSU or ADSU:
- How close they are to the exit
- How close they are to the fire or other hazard
- Whether staying where they are puts them in Greater difficulties or increased risk
- Whether attempting to withdraw puts them in Greater difficulties or increased risk
- Can they see or hear other BA teams who may be able to assist
- Impact of the fitness or condition of the BA team members on their ability to withdraw
If a DSU or ADSU has been accidentally actuated they should :
- Inform the ECO or comm-ops by radio so the emergency team isn’t committed 2. Withdraw from the risk area and report to ECP
The ECO must :
- Inform other teams committed of the accidental actuation
- Instruct the team to stay under air when reporting to the ECO
- Cancel the DSU with the affected wearers Bodyguard key
- Manually log off the BA wearer and then reinsert the tally into the same BA tally position on
the ECB and release the team back to the risk area of appropriate
When a team become aware they cannot withdraw from the scene of operations. They should take the following actions:
- Inform the ECO/COMMS-OP by radio
- Operate the DSU
- Relax as much as possible by assuming a reclined or seated posture, preferably against a
wall - Maintain physical contact with other team members
- Keep speech and movement to a minimum
- Do not use additional flow button
- Do not adjust the cylinder valve
- Keep all personal lamps switched on
Emergency exchange of air :
- The wearer requiring air alerts another team member by showing the Bodyguard and staying ‘I need air’
- The message is confirmed by the donor by checking their pressure and saying ‘I can give you air’
- The donor removes the blank cap from their second person connection
- The recipient takes a deep breath,removes their air supply using the ‘in line’ connection and
connects it to the second person connection of the donor. - Recipient removes the second person hose from the donors clips
- Recipient then links and with donor
- Donor contacts ECO with the following information
- Their location
- Whether or not they are adopting the entrapped procedure
- Whether or not they are exiting the area
- That the exchange of air has taken place and the BA wearers affected
- The recipient then activates their DSU
- Subject to whether there is sufficient air, the team leaves the area and reports to ECO, if not
enough air, they adopt entrapped procedure
10.If at any point the recipient cannot perform their tasks, the donor will on their behalf
Donor contacts eco when giving air saying
- Their location
- Whether or not they are adopting the entrapped procedure
- Whether or not they are exiting the area
- That the exchange of air has taken place and the BA wearers affected
Cable entanglement procedure
Procedure if unable to free themselves
1. Inform other team members and stay as still as possible to stop further entanglement 2. The entangled member must states “I am entangle in cables”
BA team members assisting entangled member must
- Clearly state “stay still and cross your arms at chest height “ (protects hoses)
- Approach entangled member using safe movement
- Located cables using a head to toe sweep using the backs of their hands
- Where possible, use cable cutters if unable to remove cables by hand
- Repeat above until all cables have been removed
- Stowe cable cutters
Procedure when an entangled member cannot be freed by other team members In these circumstances the entangled must:
- Inform ECO of entanglement and location of cables encountered
- Remain as still as possible
- Actuate DSU
- Locate the cables by sweeping down either side of their body
- Use own cable cutters
ECO must when alerted to entanglement:
- Commit emergency team 2. Inform IC
