intro to team based learning Flashcards
what symptoms could indicate damage to the brain stem?
if they involve cranial nerves on one side and the opposite side of the body (so one side of the head and then the opposite side of the body)
what would indicate a medial lesion?
if symptoms involve motor cranial nerves and weakness in the body
exceptions include facial, vagus, and mastication, that may be lateral - because motor neurons migrate ventralaterally
what would indicate a lateral lesion?
symptoms that involve sensory cranial nerves and loss of pain and temperature sense on the opposite side of the body
how would you determine the level of the lesion?
probably at the level of the cranial nerve nucleus and/or its exit from the brain
exceptions:
loss of facial pain and temp. sensation - lesion si in spinal trigeminal tract/nucleus in lateral medulla
weakness of lower face (with preservation of forehead strenght) - above the pons on the contralateral side in corticobulbar tract
what would be the result of damage to the dorsal columns/medial lemniscus pathway?
loss of vibratory sense, joint position sense, well-localized touch and pressure
ipsilateral dorsal columns in caudal medulla
