glia and neuroinflammation Flashcards
what are the types of glial cells?
astrocytes - fibrous - protoplasmic oligodendrocytes - perineuronal - intrafascicular microglia - mesoderm - monocyte/macrophage ependymal cells choroid plexus radial glia
schwann cells are glial cells, but are only in the PNS
what are functions of astrocytes (4)?
- establishing the BBB - processes go to and - encase blood vessels - communicate to the endothelial cells in the vessels to signal that they should form the BBB
- send processes to pia mater and hold it to the brain
- send processes that surround dendritic spines - may actively control the making and breaking of synapses
- regulates extracellular environment by releasing trophic factors, neuropeptides, inflammatory mediators, absorbing NT, making ECM proteins, detox, uptake and recycling of glutamate
can become cancerous
what do oliogodendrocytes look like? what is their function?
small nuclei, lots of processes - wrap multiple neurons (myelination
what do microglia look like? what is their origin?
dendritic cells - flatten out if damage to brain occurs - don’t come from neuroepithelium!
what is the tripartate synapse?
the pre and postsynaptic neurons plus astrocytes, that will surround the synaptic cleft and help to regulate the environment within it and Ca levels, glutamate, pass lactate to neurons
what are Ca waves?
way that astrocytes may communicate
via VG Ca channels and ATP signaling
pass through glial cells - transverse brain much more slowly than action potentials do
what do ependymal cells do?
seem to be what’s left behind but may have important function
creates ciliated barrier along ventricles
what do microglia do?
immune cells but with neuro origin - immune system of the brain
have dendritic profiles - look for antigens, signs of damage, etc
what are resting microglia called?
ramified or resting
change shape to ameboid when activated - engulf the apoptotic cell
what cells are involved in neuroinflammation?
astrocytes microglia endothelial cells perivascular cells circulating immune cells
