Intro To Skeletal System Flashcards
From powerpoint 1
Describe the two general divisions of the skeletal system
Axial: Head, trunk, skull, ossicles, hyoid, sternum, ribs, spine
Appendicular: Arms, legs, shoulders, pelvis
Compact Bone
-Dense, forms outer surface of bones. -Contains concentric, vertical Haversian canals.
-Contains osteons.
Spongy Bone
-Forms inner marrow of bones.
-Formed from branching trabeculae. -Does not have osteons but contains irregular layers of bone.
Functions of the skeletal system
-Support/framework
-Protection
-Movement/muscle attachment
-Mineral hemostasis
-Hematopoesis
-Yellow bone marrow storage
Fissure
Deep furrow/cleft
Foramen
Perforation through a bone or membrane
Fossa
A depression, usually longitudinal
Sulcus
Long narrow groove
Meatus
External opening of a canal
Condyle
Rounded articular surface at extremity of bone
Facet
Small smooth area on bone
Head
Rounded extremity of bone/a part of a complex muscle
Crest
A bony ridge
Epicondyle
Projection from a long bone where tendons or bones attach
Line (linea)
Long narrow mark/strip
