What is special care dentistry
The speciality of special care dentistry is concerned with the improvement of the oral health of individuals and groups in society who have a; • physical, • Sensory, • Intellectual • Mental, • Medical, • Emotional or • Social impairment or • Disability, or • A combination of these factors
does special care dentistry treat children?
no - an adult speciality (over 16s)
focuses on adolescents and adults only, including period of transition as adolescent moves into adulthood
what are examples of SCD groups
- Learning disability
- Physical disability
• Mental health problems
○ Can be so poor that is affects their oral health
• Homeless, refugees and asylum seekers
• Medical compromise
○ Transplant patients
○ End of life care
○ Cancer patients
- Older people
- Patients requiring behavioural management techniques
define impairment
Any loss of normal psychological, physiological, or anatomical structure or function
Impairment is considered to occur at the level of organ or system function
define disability
○ Any restriction or lack (resulting from an impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being
○ Disability is concerned with functional performance or activity, affecting the whole person
○ Disability is activity restricted by impairment

○ A disadvantage for a given individual, resulting from an impairment or a disability, that limits or prevents the fulfilment of a role that is normal (depending on age, sex, and social and cultural factors for that individual
what are the barriers to care for these patients
- Physical

what are characteristics of service use for these patients
• Fewer visits, longer intervals between • Limited access to buildings • Difficulty communicating pain • Financial ○ Lower socioeconomic status • Emergency care rather than planned • History of extractions ○ Might prefer this to complex treatment • Treatment with GA
what is the differences between clinical medical science and special care dentistry
• Clinical medical science

what is infected osteoradionecrosis
Happens in patients who had H&N cancer, got the tumour removed then has radiotherapy treatment
A side effect of this treatment destroys the blood vessels in bones leaving the patient with dead bone - patients can end up losing their jaws

what is clinical holding
Clinical holding happens in some countries but not in the UK
clinical holding is when the patient will be strapped into the chair and care / treatment will be delivered when they are restrained like this
