Intro to Pathobiology Flashcards
Define disease
any state in which the health of the human organism is impaired. Consequence of a failure of homeostasis
Define homeostasis
maintenance of a constant internal environment despite external changes. Has set limits
Define pathogenesis
the origin of a disease. ‘biological mechanisms causing clinically evident diseases’
What is a risk factor?
variable exposure or characteristic which makes a disease more likely
Define aetiology
the specific cause of a disease
Define predisposition
a susceptibiliy/tendency to develop a disease, which depends on other risk factor to become clinically evident
Causes of disease: Intrinsic Factors…
- structural
- cellular
- genetic
- metabolic
Causes of disease: Extrinsic Factors…
- nutritionl
- biological
- chemical
- physical
How much do genetic and external factors contribute to a disease?
the contribution of genetic and external factors differentiation between each disease
Example of a genetic disease
sickle cell anaemia
Example of a cellular disease
Alzheimer’s
Example of a metabolic disease
Diabetes Mellitus
Example of a nutritional disease
malnutrition
Example of a structural disease
spini bifida (congenital) or osteoarthritis (acquired)
Example of a physical disease
Agent: trauma, radiation, temperature. Example: bone fracture, cancer, burns/frostbite (respectively)
