Intro to NS Flashcards
Astrocytes
Glial cells for maintenance
Microglia
Glial cells for surveillance
Oligodendroxytes
make myelin in CNS
Schwann cells
make myelin in PNS
Brainstem
Medulla, pons, midbrain (regulate heart rate, breathing, blood; activate cerebral cortex, attention, consciousness, and sleep regulation)
Cerebellum
Coordination, timing and precision of fine movements, motor learning of skilled tasks
Diencephalon
Thalamus (relay station/sensory gate - olfactory) and Hypothalamus (control center for autonomic and endocrine system)
Gray matter
neuron cell bodies; cortex = sulci and gyri, basal ganglia = motor gate, amygdala = emotional gate
White matter
axons/dendrites grouped into tracts
Lobes of cerebral hemispheres
Frontal, occipital, parietal, temporal (anterior = motor; posterior = sensory)
Frontal lobe
motor cortices, Broca’s; prefrontal = executive brain controlling ROI (restraint, order, initiation)
Parietal lobe
Perception of environment and body image, attention, language and analytical thinking (anterior = somatosensory sensations; posterior = sensory input from somatosensory, visual, auditory, and vestibular, Wernicke’s area)
Temporal lobe
Language, emotion and memory (hippocampus), visual processing for object and pattern recognition, and high-order visual recognition
Occipital
VISION
Limbic system
Affective brain - responsible for emotional context
