What is maternal health ?
health of women during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods
What is newborn health ?
focuses on the health of a neonate, or newborn infant, during the first month of life
What is infant health ?
birth to one year of life
What is maternal mortality ?
death while pregnant or within 42 days (6 weeks) of the end of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy
What is pregnancy-associated mortality ?
the death of a woman while pregnant or within one year of the end of a pregnancy, regardless of cause
- 3 categories: related to pregnancy, unrelated, or unable to determine relatedness
What is pregnancy-related mortality ?
the death of a woman during pregnancy or within one year of the end of a pregnancy from a pregnancy complication or event initiated by the physiologic effects of pregnancy
What is maternal morbidity ?
physical or mental illness or disability directly related to pregnancy and/or childbirth
What is the common causes for maternal mortality in the U.S ?
- mental health conditions, including substance use disorder and overdose (23%)
- excessive bleeding (hemorrhage) (14%)
- cardiac and coronary conditions (13%)
- infection (9%)
- thrombotic embolism (9%)
- cardiomyopathy (9%)
- hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (7%)
What is the maternal mortality review committees (MMRCs) ?
multidisciplinary groups that comprehensively review all maternal death cases that occurred within 1 year of the end of pregnancy
What are some leading causes of infant mortality in the U.S ?
- congenital malformations
- short gestation/low birth weight
- SIDS
- unintentional injuries
- maternal complications
What are some leading causes of infant mortality in Indiana ?
- perinatal risks
- congenital anomalies
- SUIDs
- assaults/injuries
