Health Education (Community) Flashcards
What is the cognitive learning theory ?
focuses on how people understand, learn, and remember information
- allows for understanding of mental processes
- Ex.) thinking, memory, and problem-solving
- used to encourage self-reflection
What is the behavioral learning theory ?
learning is influenced by external forces
- positive reinforcements makes learner more likely to complete a task (incentives offered improve behavior)
- Ex.) Pavlov’s dog
What is the social learning theory ?
learning happens by observing others
- depending on the consequences, learner will imitate or avoid that behavior
- takes cognitive and environmental factors into consideration
What is the experiential learning theory ?
learning comes from experiences
- learners retain and recall information when they are hands-on
- involves participation in real-world experiences
What is the transformative learning theory ?
learners can change the way they think once they have new information
- learner reflects on previous experiences
- critical evaluation on perspective occurs (results in transformation of thinking)
What is the humanistic learning theory ?
learning is a holistic process
- educator acts as a facilitator (provides environment conductive to learning)
- freedom for students to learn what they are interested in
- retention of knowledge is not used to evaluate learner
What is a cognitive domain of learning ?
focuses on how learner thinks
- development of knowledge and skill
What is a affective domain of learning ?
focuses on how learner’s values evolve
What is a psychomotor domain of learning ?
application of knowledge
- use of sensory-motor skills
What is the health belief model ?
determines internal motivation to make health-related changes
- perception of risk of getting ill
- modifying factors
- likelihood to take action
- helps to explain why people take or avoid health-related actions based on their beliefs about the risks, benefits, and challenges
What is the health promotion model ?
determines factors that influence motivation to change
- focuses on disease prevention and health promotion
- individual characteristics
- behavior specific cognitions and affect
- behavioral outcome
What is the transtheoretical model ?
encompasses stages of change
- precontemplation
- contemplation
- preparation
- action
- maintenance
What is the cultural care theory ?
used to provide culturally congruent care
- must consider culture when providing care and education
- make effort to learn about other cultures
What is health literacy ?
ability to obtain, understand, and make health-related decisions
