Intro to Head and Neck Flashcards
What is decussation?
Term for when nerves cross from one side of the brain to the other.
What does ipsilateral mean?
Nerve runs on same side it originated from
what does contralateral mean?
Nerve runs on opposite side it originated from
What is the precentral gyrus function?
voluntary motor movement
what is the function of Brocca’s area?
Language production
What is the prefrontal cortex used for?
personality, judgement, motivation, impulse control, planning, problem solving, emotionality
What lobe is the postcentral gyrus in? What does it do? What other area does it contain? What’s behind the postcentral gyrus, and what is its function?
The parietal lobe. Primary somatosensory synapses. Contains the primary gustatory complex (taste). The association area is behind the postcentral gyrus. It is for understanding concepts, and location awareness. Also telling right from left, understanding numbers, reading comprehension
Where is wernicke’s area? what does it do?
partially in parietal lobe, and partially in temporal lobe. Important for language COMPREHENSION.
what is the temporal lobe important for? contains?
learning and memory (hippocampus). Has auditory complex for hearing,, olfactory association. Also important for facial recognition. Also has emotion areas.
Brain stem has how many cranial nerves nerves associated with it? How many on each part? Also a through way for what?
10 total. has 2 on midbrain, 4 on pons, 4 on medulla. A through-way for fiber tracks, both sensory and motor.
Explain the functional 3 areas of the cerebellum
- spinocerebellum (mostly anterior lobe)- control of muscle tone and coordination
- cerebrocerebellum (mostly posterior lobe)- motor planning, learning and memory of motor movements
- vestibulocerebellum (flocular nodular lobe)- balance, eye movements, posture adjustments
what is the diaphragma sella?
Has a hole for the pituitary stock
