Intro to family diversity Flashcards
Reasons for increase in cohabitation
- changes in social attitudes - among the younger generations which are more likely to accept cohabitation -decline in stigma attached to pre-marital sex.
- Increased career opportunity for women- has freed women from having to rely on a husband for financial support so women chose to cohabit rather than get married.
- secularisation - decline in religious beliefs means people don’t have to abide by religious rules which may teach that cohabitation is a sin.
- Gender equality- young people may chose to cohabit as an attempt to create a more equal relationship.
Reasons for increase in LPF
greater economic indep for women
improved reproductive technology
changing social attitudes -less stigma attached to being a lone, unmarried parent
secularisation -decline in religious influences means that having a baby outside of marriage is no longer seen as sinful
increase in divorce rates- increase in lpf, esp those headed by women as courts tend to give custody of children to mothers as they are seen as more caring.
why are classic extended families decreasing
housing is too small to support large families as its too expensive for low income earners to support many people
grandparents can still provide support for the parents e.g babysitting
needs of the economy-people often have to move to another city to work, its easier as a NF
Why are empty next families decreasing?
Increase in the adult-kids- young adults who have moved back home after uni as they can’t afford to live independently. They are referred to as the boomerang generation as they have not been able to fly the next. Those who chose to move back in with their parents because it’s more comfortable, cheaper and easier are referred to as the KIPPERS- kids in parents’ pockets. So the transition from youth to adulthood is becoming longer and this stage is known as kidulthood.
