Intro to endocrinology Flashcards
What are the three hormone families?
Amine, Peptide, Lipid and phospholipid
Give examples of the three hormone families.
Amine-tyrosine, tryptophan
Peptide- small(TSH+ADH), protein (insulin+ growth H), glycoprotein (luteinising + tyrosine-stim)
Lipid- cholesterol
what’s Kd ?
dissociation constant hormone-receptor interaction
what’s the limiting step of endocrine system?
hormone binding
-driven by 2nd messenger or phosphorylation cascades
what 3 factors determine [hormone] seen by target cells?
rate of release; synthesis + secretion= -ve and +ve feedback controlled
rate of delivery; increased blood flow
rate of degradation and elimination
what are the functions of primary endocrine organs?
main function= secrete functions
EG. thyroid, pituitary, adrenal gland
What are the functions of secondary endocrine organs ?
secrete secondary hormones e.g muscles- musculin
what’s more sensitive radio-immune assay or ELISA?
Radio-immune assay
