Intro to CNS anatomy Flashcards
What do the following primary brain vesicles develop into?
Prosencephalon
Mesencephalon
Rhombencephalon
Prosencephalon: Telencephalon and Diencephalon
Mesencephalon: Mesencephalon
Rhombencephalon: Metencephalon and Myelencephalon
What do these 5 secondary brain vesicles go onto form in the adult brain? Telencephalon Diencephalon Mesencephalon Metencephalon Myelencephalon
Telencephalon - cerebral hemispheres Diencephalon - thalamus and hypothalamus Mesencephalon - Midbrain Metencephalon - Cerebellum and pons Myelencephalon - Medulla
What is the corpus collosum?
White matter tract - links right and left hemispheres, intersects with corona radiata
What do the pre-central and post-central gyrus contain?
Pre-central gyrus - primary motor cortex
Post central gyrus - primary somatosensory cortex
What does the pre-frontal cortex control?
Emotional behavious, processes, decision making, flat personality, memory
What can result as an injury to the premotor and supplementary motor cortex?
Ideomotor apraxias - patient cannot act out a movement
In general, the left and right side of the brain, look after the opposite side of the body. However, what are some things which are side specific?
Left: Bilateral audio, speech, writing, language
Right: Bilateral audio, spatial recognition, facial recognition
What are association, commisural and projection fibres, what do they connect?
Association fibres (within a hemisphere) Commisural fibres (between hemispheres) Projection fibres (to brainstem/spinal cord)
What is Broca’s area involved in?
Production/ motor planning involved in speech
What is Wernicke’s area involved in?
Comprehension/ understand speech
