Caudate nucleus + putamen
What nuclei make up the pallidum?
Globus pallidus internus and externus + substantia nigra pars compacta
What nuclei make up the lentiform nucleus?
Putamen + globus pallidus internus and externus
What pathway does Parkinson’s affect?
Direct (excitatory) pathway
What receptor does dopamine act on in the direct pathway?
D1 receptors in the striatum
What does the direct pathway do?
Promote movement
What does the indirect pathway do?
Reduces unwanted movement
What pathway does Huntington’s affect?
Indirect (inhibitory) pathway
What receptor does dopamine act on in the indirect pathway?
D2 receptors in the striatum
What does the cortex do?
Excite striatum
What does the striatum do?
In direct pathway, inhibits Globus Pallidus Internus + SNPR. In indirect pathway, inhibits globus pallidus externus.
What does the Globus pallidus internus + SNPR do?
Inhibits thalamus
What does thalamus ventral anterior/lateral nucleus do?
Excites cortex (via pre/supplemental motor)
What does Globus pallidus externus do?
Inhibits Subthalamic nucleus
What does subthalamic nucleus do?
Excites Globus pallidus internus + SNPR
