Q

What are the 8 basic properties of cells?

A
  1. small and composed of complex biomolecules
  2. Can replicate (different from reproduce) themselves
  3. Can metabolize
    - Catabolize: breakdown compounds to produce simpler compounds and energy.
    - Anabolize: build molecules required by cells.
  4. Capable of self regulation - Support all its cellular activities needed for survival, e.g. make its own macromolecules, ATPs, regulate own growth, etc.
  5. Osmoregulate - control what gets in/out of membranes (organelle or plasma)
  6. Active - involved in numerous mechanical activities such as assembly, disassembly, & movement of organelles
  7. Respond to stimuli - via cell surface receptors
  8. Die - absence of life is a most defining characteristic of living.

Q

What is the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?

A
  1. prokaryotes are unicellular but eukaryotes can be both unicellular and multicellular
  2. prokaryotes do not have membrane bound cell organelles
  3. prokaryotes do not have a membrane bound nucleus
  4. prokaryotes have a capsule, pili and flagella but eukaryotes don’t

Q

What is the difference between plant cells and animal cells?

A
  1. Plant cells have a cell wall, but animals cells do not.
  2. Plant cells have chloroplasts, but animal cells do not
  3. Plant cells usually have one or more large vacuole(s), while animal cells have smaller vacuoles, if any are present.

Q

How does virus infect it’s host?

A
  1. attach to host cell
  2. enteres cell and release it’s DNA or RNA
  3. using the host cell’s resources and energy, it produces viral proteins
  4. virions are released from host cells once it’s matured
