Intro to BV/Cover Test Flashcards
What is simultaneous perception?
Perceiving that there are two images, but seeing them separately
What is fusion?
Ability to fuse two images into a single percept
What is stereopsis?
Ability to perceive depth due to retinal disparity
What is flat fusion?
Perceiving two images and fusing them, with no depth perception
What is suppression?
Ignoring the image from one eye to avoid diplopia
Why do we have BV?
To increase FOV
To compensate for blind spot
Binocular summation
Stereopsis
What is binocular summation?
the combination of two images results in improved VA due to processing in the brain
What’s needed for BV?
Two eyes
Similar image size
Similar VA (good)
Intact visual pathways
Sensory and motor pathways working properly
What sensory elements contribute to BV?
Sensing alignment of eyes
Signalling to motor system to align muscles
Ability to make sense of monocular images to combine them
Localisation
What motor elements contribute to BV?
Voluntary EOMS
Involuntary ciliary and pupil muscles
Ability to move eyes to line up with target and maintain alignment
When does the plastic period end?
8-9 years old
What happens if BV issues are not addressed within the plastic period?
Suppression
Little to no stereopsis
What are corresponding points?
Areas on each retina which perceive the same part of the image
What is the Primary visual direction also known as?
Principal visual direction
Visual axis
Direction of gaze
What does the secondary visual direction perceive?
Anything outside of the fovea
