Intro To Bio/Review Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O ——> C6H12O6 + 6O2
What is the equation for cellular respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ——> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Which types of organisms are prokaryotes?
Bacteria and Archaea
Which types of organisms are Eukaryotes?
Animals, plants, fungi, and protists
What is the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
Prokaryotes do not have a true nucleus or membrane bound organelles, as well as their dna is not associated with proteins.
What are the three parts of the cell theory?
All living things are composed of cells
Cells are the basic unit of life
All new cells come from pre-existing cells
What are cell membranes made up of? How permeable are they?
Cell membranes are made up of phospholipid belayers that have water attracting heads and 2 water repelling tails. They are selectively permeable.
What does hydrophilic and hydrophobic mean? Are they the same thing?
No they are not the same. Hydrophilic means water loving, while hydrophobic means water repelling.
Guess the organelle: contains chlorophyll, a green pigment that traps energy from sunlight and makes sugar and oxygen
Chloroplast
Guess the organelle: is the site of cellular respiration
Mitochondrion
Guess the organelle: packages proteins for transportation
Golgi body
Guess the organelle: digests excess or worn out cell parts, food particles and invading viruses or bacteria
Lysosomes
Guess the organelle: firm, protective structure that gives the cell its shape.
Cell wall
Guess the organelle: makes proteins. Has two subunits
Ribosomes
Guess the organelle: made of microtubules. Separates chromosomes during mitosis
Centrioles
Guess the organelle: is a phospholipid bilateral that determines which substances can enter and exit the cell
Cell membrane
Guess the organelle: contains the genetic information and controls the activities of the cell
Nucleus
Guess the organelle: makes ribosomes. Is found in the nucleus
Nucleolus
Guess the organelle: the solution in the entire cell, not including the organelles
Cytosol
Guess the organelle: the fluid part of the cell, including the organelles.
Cytoplasm
Guess the organelle: interconnected phospholipid bilayers responsible for the transport of materials. It is typically connected to the nucleus
E.R
Guess the organelle:a general term for a sac surrounded by a phospholipid balayer that stores macromolecules, waste and water.
Vacoule
Guess the organelle: are used for locomotion. Are made by centrioles
Cilia and flagella
Guess the organelle: a network of microtubules that maintain the shape of the cell
Cytoskeleton
