DNA Structure And Function Flashcards
What is DNA and what does it stand for?
It carries genetic information. It is deoxyribonucleic acid.
What are chromosomes made up of?
DNA and proteins
What is DNA modeled as?
A double helix/spiral staircase or ladder
What are the two sides of the DNA ladder made up of?
Sugar and phosphate groups (deoxyribose and PO4 -3)
What are the rungs of the ladder made up of?
Nitrogenous bases
What are the four possible nitrogenous bases and their pairings?
Adenine and Thymine, or Cytosine and Guanine
How are nitrogenous bases attached together?
Hydrogen bonding
What is a nucleotide?
A nitrogenous base, deoxyribose sugar, and a phosphate group
What are single ring structures called and which nitrogenous bases are they?
They are called pyrimidines and they are thymine and cytosine
What are double ring structures called and which nitrogenous bases are they?
They are called purines and they are adenine and guanine
Define semi conservative
When the nucleotides become unzipped when the hydrogen bonds break apart, the floating strands find a complimentary base to form a new nucleotide. Two identical helixes are formed.
