Intro to Bible OT 2 Flashcards
Isaiah
Focused on the servant of the Lord: his birth, ministry, and sacrificial death, as well as his launch of a new worldwide exodus and the merger of heaven and earth
Jeremiah
His emotionally charged message of judgement got him beaten and thrown into a dungeon- only to be rescued and kidnapped
Ezekiel
After receiving visions of God’s glory, he offered prophetic mimes and graphic language to try to get the attention of the Judah’s deported people in Babylon
Daniel
Groomed to work for the government of Babylon, the courageous message brought persecution and yet caricature like visions brought hope of Messiah’s reign
Hosea
His marriage reflected the seriousness of spiritual compromise among God’s people. He called it: “the spirit of prostitution”
Amos
The fig farmer’s 5 visions confirmed his message: God will judge those who exploit society’s poor and vulnerable
Obadiah
His message to Edom was short but not sweet: don’t gloat over the demise of others that yo’ve been holding a grudge against for generations
Jonah
Reluctant to prophesy to the capital city of the terrorists of his day (Nineveh). Ironically, terrorists repent while God’s people refuse to turn back to God
Micah
Called believers to “do justice, love, mercy, and walk humbly with God” while living in a wounded, oppressive world of injustice
Nahum
A brutal message of judgement against the Assyrian terrorists who would experience the merciless violence and destruction they had been sowing for years
Joel, Habakkuk, Zephaniah
The “Day of the Lord” message if God’s “visitations” (interventions) in history that exonerate the faithful and judge those who mock him (“justice”)
Haggai, Zechariah
A post- exilic message of encouragement to God’s people when they were stuck in a 20- year delay: “finish building the temple!”
Malachi
God’s people were “deconstructing” their faith with a list of questions that made it uncertain they would welcome the Messiah when he appeared
