Intro to anatomy and physiology Flashcards
Define anatomy
scientific study of the body’s structures
What are the four branches of anatomy?
Gross, microscopic, regional and systemic
Define Macroscopic or gross anatomy
Larger structures of the body, visible without aid of magnification
Define Microscopic anatomy
study of structures that can only be observed with the use of a microscopic or magnification device
Define Regional anatomy
Interrelationships of all structures in a specific body region
Define Systemic anatomy
Structures that make up a discrete body system
Where is the dorsal cavity located?
The whole backside of the body
Where is the cranial cavity located?
Just the top section of the skull, holding the brain
What does the Ventral cavity (coelom) consist of?
the whole anterior of the body
What does the spinal cavity (vertebral canal) consist of?
the vertebrae
what does a Diaphragm do?
separates thoracic cavity from the abdominal pelvic cavity
What does the thoracic cavity contain?
Respiratory/digestive organs, mainly the heart and lungs
What is does the Pleural cavity do?
Separates the lungs from the thoracic wall
Where is the Mediastinum located?
Inside of the thoracic wall, not enclosed in fluid
What does the mediastinum contain?
the thyroid, thymus, trachea, esophagus and the heart
