Intro To Anatomy And M3dical Terminology 1 Flashcards
What is Anatomy ?
The study of the structure and function of the human body
What is gross anatomy?
Anatomy that can be seen anywhere with the Naked eye
What is histology?
Study of tissues
What is sectional anatomy?
Relates to imaging
What is surface anatomy?
Living anatomy- the ability to localize a deeper organ by using easily identified landmarks through the skin
What is mapping?
Refers to segmental nerve segmental nerve supply to skin and muscles directly related to development
What is the purpose of medical professionals using the language of anatomists ?
This is to ensure that there is no confusion between health professionals and allow for better care of the patient
Description of anatom8cal structures and their locations requires a baseline so that everyone can understand what is being described
Describe the anatomical position
In this position, the body is erect, the eyes look straight to the front, the upper limbs hang by the side of the trunk with the palms directed forwards, and the lower limbs are parallel with the toes facing forwards
What is Fowler’s position?
Lying on back with a 30 degree angle
What is the supine position?
Lying on back (recumbent)
What is the prone position?
Lying down on abdomen
What is the lithotomy position?
Hips and knees fully flexed, thighs separated
What is the left decubitus position?
Lying on left side
What is the standard position for physical examination?
The physician is to the right of the patient
What does anterior mean?
Towards the front
What is the posterior position?
Towards the back
What does superior mean?
Towards the head
What does inferior mean?
Towards the feet
What does medial mean?
Towards the midline
What does lateral mean?
Away from the midline
What dies Ipsilateral mean?
On the same sides
What does contralateral mean?
On opposite sides
What does ventral mean?
Towards the belly
What does dorsal mean?
Towards the back
What does cranial or rostral mean?
Towards the head
What does proximal mean?
Nearer to the trunk
What does distal mean?
Away from the trunk
What dies superficial mean?
Closer to the skin
What does deep. Mean?
Closer to the inside of the body
What are planes with the body(concept )?
Some planes relate to how they divide the body e.g., saggital
Other planes are used as reference points: these correspond to particular bony land marks:
- Midclaavicular (MCL)
- Subcostal plane
- Transthiracic plane (plane of Ludwig)
- transtubercular plane
- paravertebral
Many are used for describing the surface anatomy of deeper structures
Often used in imaging
Knowing what occurs at a particular plain will assist you in identifying possible problems/ anomalies
What are the mai; planes of the body?
Median Sagittal and para saggital(both divide into left and right)
Coronal- divides into anterior and posterior
Transverse/ horizontal/ axial/ cross section
