Intro to A&P Flashcards
What is the study of bones?
Osteology; osteo being bone related
What is the study of joints?
Arthrology; Arthro being joint related
What is the study of muscles?
Myology; Myo being muscle related
What does endocrine mean?
Inside the body; often refers to ductless glands
List the structures of the body from smallest to largest.
Chemicals, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organism
What is homeostasis?
Chemical equilibrium in the body. Think Thanos
What are the necessary life functions?
Homeostasis, movement, responsiveness, digestion, metabolism, excretion, reproduction, and growth
What life functions are the first to stop if an organism is not receiving what they need?
Reproduction and growth
What is the difference between necessary life functions and survival needs?
Necessary life functions are like maintenance while survival needs are necessary to survive.
What are survival needs?
Nutrients, oxygen, water, normal body temperature, and atmospheric pressure.
T/F Active transport happens with no use of energy.
False. Active transport uses energy
T/F An example of passive energy is diffusion.
True
What type of feedback loop forces the body to return to homeostasis using things like sweating or shivering?
Negative
Give an example of positive feedback
Stimulation of contractions during childbirth.
What are the 4 main classes of tissue?
Epithelium, connective, nervous, and muscle
What type of structural fiber is made of thick parallel bundles and is found in tendons and ligaments?
Collagen
What is a term that refers to a tissue having a blood supply?
Vascular
T/F Epithelial cells have an expansive extracellular matrix
False, epithelia have no extracellular matrix
How many cell layers does simple epithelia have?
1
What body system contains transitional epithelium?
The urinary system
What type of Dense connective tissue is composed mostly of elastic fibers, and is found in areas which require stretching?
Elastic
What type of cartilage is found at the points of connection between long bones (articular)?
Hyaline
_____________ is both amorphous and homogenous, and contains cell adhesion molecules and proteoglycans. It is the fluid between cells where the cell can exchange fluid and waste with the bloodstream.
Ground substance
Where is the extracellular matrix located?
Between cells
