INTRO - Integumentary system Flashcards
Explain the significance of Langer lines.
Incision across Langer lines disrupt more collagen fibers and cause wounds to gape and heal with excessive (keloid) scarring. Incisions parallel to Langer lines minimize this.
Superficial lacerations
Superficial lacerations do not interrupt continuity of dermis - involve epidermis and possibly superficial dermis
Deep lacerations
Extend into subcutaneous tissue and beyond, gape, and required suturing to minimize scarring
Burns (degree)
1st: superficial - limited to epidermis
2nd: partial thickness - epidermal and superficial dermis damaged
3rd: full thickness - may be down to muscle and requires skin grafting to open area
Rule of Nines
Anterior & posterior head and neck - 9%
Anterior & poster arms, forearms, and hands - 18%
Anterior & posterior trunk - 36%
Perinium - 1%
Anterior & posterior thighs, legs, and feet - 36%
Major burns
3rd degree over 10%
2nd degree over 25%
3rd degree burns on the face, hands, feet, or perineum
