Intro Flashcards
What’s the difference between pathophysiology vs. pathology?
pathophysiology: study of disruption of the normal body function due to disease or physiology of abnl function. FUNCTIONAL ABNORMALITY
pathology: study of STRUCTURAL ABNORMALITY which is expressed as a disease of tissue, organs, systems
What is the difference between disease and homeostasis?
disease: abnormality in homeostasis
homeostasis: dynamic steady state to regulate the body. Health
etiology
cause of disease ir disorder
idiopathic disease vs iatrogenic
idiopathic: don’t know the cause, because you’re an IDIOT who doesn’t know the PATH
iatrogenic: result of medical tx
congenital
disorder occurring during fetal development
nosocomial
infectious disorder as result of being inside hospital
genetic
inherited disease
acute disease
severe disorder with qucik onset. Usually self limiting with signs and sxs
Chronic disease
long term & continuous, with exacerbatios, remissions, typically not curable
subacute disease
between acute & chronic timeframes
subclinical disease
no signs or sxs that doesnt progress
carrier state
pt harbors organism but does not have sxs but can transmit the disease (typhoid mary)
disease vs syndrome?
disease- impairment of cells, tissues, organs, systems which alters nl function and disrupts homeostasis
syndrome- group of clinical sxs & physical features that characterizes a certain disorder
what is coarctation? what syndrome is it seen in?
pinching off of the ascending aorta.
Turners
What are examples of syndromes?
Down syndrome Cushings syndrome Fetal Alcohol syndrome Turners Klinefelters Toxic Shock Syndrome
