Intro Flashcards
What are the two types of scientific data?
Qualitative Data
Quantitate data
What is an Inference?
An Inference is using available clues and evidence to reduce our understand things not directly observed
What is Qualitative data?
It uses our senses to gather info
Gives a general statement
Does not involve numerical values
What is Quantitate data?
It uses both our senses and instruments to gather info
Info consist of numerical info that can be measured or counted
What is the scientific method?
Scientists that carry out experiments in order to under why, how, or when something happens
What is scientific inquiry?
The questioning to understand why, how, or when something happens
What are the three different types of variables?
Independent variable
Dependent variable
Controlled variable
What is an independent variable?
It’s a factor or condition that can be manipulated directly
What is a controlled variable?
It is a factor or condition that is kept constant because it is not being studied but it can affect the dependent variable
What is accuracy?
Accuracy is how close a reading or measurement is to the real or true value
What is precision?
Precision is how close readings and measurements of the same objects are to each other
What is parallax error?
It is an error when the instrument is viewed from the wrong angle
How do you fix parallax error?
Position the eye so that the line of sight is perpendicular to the marking on the ruler
What are the different parts of the bunsen burner?
Barrel
Collar
Air hole
Gas inlet
Needle valve
Base
How do you fix zero error?
Adjust the instrument to give a quantity
Press the tare button before measuring a quantitiy
What is the purpose of the barrel?
To mix gas and air
What is the purpose of the collar?
To adjust the amount of air intake
What is the purpose of the air hole?
To allow air to enter the burner
What is the purpose of the gas inlet?
To allow gas to enter the burner from a source
What is the purpose of the needle value?
To regulate the amount of gas entering the burner
What is the purpose of the base?
To support the burner
What are the two different flames that can be produced by the bunsen burner?
Luminous flame
Non-luminous flame
What is the purpose of the luminous flame?
To show that the Bunsen Burner is turned on
What is the purpose of the non-luminous flame?
For heating
How does a strike-back flame occur?
When the air hole is left fully open when the bunsen burner is being ignited
