Intrinsic Muscles of the Shoulder Flashcards
Origin of the supraspinatus
medial 2/3 of supra spinous fossa of scapula
Insertion of supraspinatus
uppermost facet of greater tuberosity of humerus
(its tendon passes deep to the coracoacromial arch and separated from it by the subacromial bursa)
Nerve supply of supraspinatus
Suprascapular nerve
Actions of supraspinatus
- abduction of the arm (from 0 to 15 degrees)
- helps keep the head of the humerus in the glenoid cavity during the action of other muscles
Origin of infraspinatus (2)
- medial 2/3 of infraspinous fossa
- from fascia covering the muscle
Insertion of Infraspinatus
into the middle facet of greater tuberosity of humerus
Nerve supply of infraspinatus
Suprascapular nerve
Actions of infraspinatus
- adduction of the arm
- lateral rotation of the arm
- steadies shoulder joint
Origin of teres minor
Upper 2/3 of dorsal aspect of lateral border of scapula
Insertion of teres minor
lowermost facet on the back of greater tuberosity of humerus
Nerve supply of teres minor
axillary nerve (circumflex)
Actions of teres minor
- Lateral rotation of the arm
- Adduction of the arm
- Steadies shoulder joint
Origin of teres major
an oval area on the lower 1/3 of dorsal aspect of lateral border of scapula
Insertion of teres major
into medial lip of bicipital groove of humerus
Nerve supply of teres major
lower subscapular nerve
