Structured interview
Pre determined questions \+ easily replicated \+ requires less skill \+ easier to analyse - inflexible- can't follow up interesting responses
Unstructured or semi structured
Semi: flexible, some pre determined questions
Unstructured: have a theme yet no pre determined questions
+ ask follow up questions
- possible effect of interviewer bias
- hard to compare and analyse
- require well trained interviewers
Advantages of interview compared to a questionnaire
Can adapt questions in unstructured
Can clarify misunderstanding
Pick up on non verbal cues
May be more honest/ open
Disadvantages
Social desirability
Interviewer effects: physical characteristics/ behaviour
Imposed Etic
Culture- specific idea wrongly imposed on another culture
Appropriate interviewer
Gender and age, non indigenous may be appropriate due to imposed Etic, personal characteristics have an effect eg appearance or use of language
Define what interviews are and state the different types
Consists of questions asked to a participant (interviewee) in real time- face to face/ phone
