Good Non-Verbal communications you can send to patients throughout the interview include Good;
Posture
Facial Expressions
Gestures

When verbally communicating with a patient what should you keep in mind?
When using verbal communication with a client you want to ensure that you are using good;
Word Choice
Tone of Voice
Pace
Volume
As well as projecting a calm and confident demanor
What are traits of an ideal interview setting?
You ideally want the scene of your interview to be;
Private
Quiet
Void of distractions such as TV or phones
Equal status seating
Maintaining comfortable personal space
And allowing the patient to remain in their street close if at all possible
When should you use Open Ended Questions in an interview V. close ended questions?
Open ended questions are typically used to introduce a new topic or allow the patient to tell their story, such as onset of symptoms and how it affects ADL.
Whereas Close ended questions should be used to obtain specific information from a patient, such as location of symptoms or what medications are prescribed/taken.
What are traps you want to avoid when interviewing?
When interviewing a patient you should avoid;
Providing false reassurance
Giving unwanted advice
Using authority inappropriatley
Using avoidance language
Distancing
Using professional jargon
Using leading or biased questions
Talking too much
interrupting the patient
Asking “Why” questions
What are good interview techniques for child patients?
When interviewing a child, establish a relationship with their parent first in order to let them see that the parent is comfortable with you.
You should also use their name, ask short simple questions, provide short and simple answers, and maintain calm and friendly faces/tone of voice.
What are good interview techniques in reference to interviewing Adolescent patients?
When interviewing an adolescent patient be sure to;
Offer them respect
Be honest
Stay professional (no teen jargon)
Focus first on them, THEN on the problem
Give Positive Reinforcement
and Save difficult topics until the end of the interview.
What are good techniques for interviewing older adult patients?
When interviewing an older adult patient be sure to;
Use their last name as a show of respect
Allow for a longer time to conduct the interview
Adjust your pace to avoid rushing the patient
Make appropriate adjustments for physical limitations such as hearing difficulty or mobility issues.
What might you consider when a patient under the influence of illicit drugs or alcohol?
You want to make sure to stick to simple and short questions and explanations. As well as this may conflict with the reliability of the information given.
What is the purpose of a General Survey?
A General Survey is the first component of an assessment which gives you a basis to run the appointment by.
