Intervention within PICO Flashcards

1
Q

Interventions are designed to answer relational or experimental questions

A

To answer relational questions, such as what is the impact of X on Y, researchers intervene in practices.
>. These are framed as experiments.
>. Relational questions establish whether change in one variable is associated with change in another variable
>. Experimental questions test whether one variable causes a change in another variable.

Q

Variables

A

> . are factors that have influence;
. vary in both value and intensity;
. can be counted or measured; and
. may be in the form of numbers or non-numerical characteristics.

Q

Independent & dependent variables

A

> . Independent variables have an affect on dependent variables.
. A dependent variable is affected by the independent variable.
. The researcher is usually focused on the dependent variable.

Q

Confounding variables are:

Q

A null hypothesis

A

> . Tests the relationship between independent & dependent variables;
. Means that one variable has no impact on the other; and
. Is discounted if one variable does impact the other

Q

Confidence interval (CI) & Margin of error (MoE)

A

> . A Confidence interval is the estimate of how accurately the sample population reflects total population (N).
. This is described as a range of values (e.g. 95%)
The margin of error is how far from the sample estimate the true mean value might be (+/-)
. t-test, p-value
